The need to rescue and rehome dogs across Hawaii Island continues to increase, as well as the financial challenges that come with caring for the island’s loyal companions.

Aloha ‘Ilio Rescue, a 501(c)3 nonprofit community dog rescue, is dedicated to rescuing dogs on the Big Island and providing the best quality of life for those in their care. They are also committed to not only finding good homes but finding good people who will welcome the dogs into their family.

This year, HFS Federal Credit Union’s annual fundraiser was in support of this organization.

Throughout the month of October, monetary donations were collected at six branch locations. Thanks to the generosity and support of its members and individuals in the community, the amount collected was $37,300 — the highest in credit union annual fundraising history.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our members in raising funds to assist Aloha ‘Ilio Rescue to carry out their mission,” Nathan N. Abe, president and CEO, HFS FCU, said in a press release. “They play a vital role in providing necessary care for dogs in transition to their permanent homes. We’re honored that we were able to support their efforts.”

A check in the amount of $37,300 was presented to Aloha ‘Ilio Rescue’s President and Founder Daylynn Kyles.

“I wanted to do something that made a difference to our island community and its animals. My motivation is to stop the overpopulation and euthanasia of homeless dogs,” she said in the press release. “I want to bring awareness and education to our community and change the issues that have been overlooked for far too long. While dogs are in our care, we promise to give them the best possible experience here, always treat them with compassion, insure a clean, healthy space and daily exercise while making sure we always remember to serve our community with aloha.”
